No, that microphone thing was actually an example, all the waves in your mix does that - there is always phase cangellation going on - unless you only used sinus sounds...

And yes when the signals sum up, and where there comes a complete phase cancellation (180 degrees, kind of), then it just suppresses the sound ompletely at that point.
