but as a result a few sceners have written new tunes in ancient player routines, i think that's fun

there has been a tiny movement in past years to 'crack' the various ULA beeper engines (what would be Z80 format here) -- it took ages -- we were doing the tape multiload routines before that

no idea who that FearofDark guy is but he can write a nice tune.

POKEY also is out of tune due to having only 8 bits to specify a frequency, unless you combine channels. Very distinctive.

...although the ST was way ahead of the speccy in graphics, it had the same sound. same with demo tunes of course. but if you cannot tell AY/YM from SID -- then you have a problem, contact your doctor.
mirrorbird(23:19:22)
if you have a very good ear, you can tell POKEY from AY/YM purely because it has four channels. | re AY/YM: certainly back in the day the same music would often be used on both -- Pac-Mania would probably be a good example (or any game circa 1988-1990)...

Vortex Tracker has a toggle you can use to swap between AY and YM. It would be interesting if that matches the difference you hear. They are very close... and granted, both emulations in this tracker, but also very close to the real chips.

i said the YM one is better, i think that's true, but i don't remember why or how. they are almost identical. (do not confuse with POKEY!)
mirrorbird(23:15:56)
edlin: yeah i have a feeling the YM actually sounds inherently different because of SOMETHING -- TIMING -- but not sure, might just be bullshit.
