Was it a long time ago you started your c64? I'd suggest you'll take a look at the psu since those are known to fry your c64 after some years

cut a good length, then slide it down to the bottom of the wire where it's soldered, then put some heat on it (a match works). If it gets loose then there won't be any parts from the wire that can touch the c64
