Play this small test module made by SoulEye.

Open the Configuration window (Ctrl+F) and go to the Audio tab.

If you are under Windows 95/98/ME, it is recommanded to select a DirectSound device. Check the "Minimum delay" option and decrease the buffer size until you get a crackling sound.

If you are under Windows NT4/2000/XP, you can select a normal device. 4 buffers is almost always good. If you want buffers smaller than 20ms, you may need to increase their number.
Try the "Callback" option if the sound is not stable.

The melody will help you to tell if the sound is stable (i.e. not crackling).
And the bass drum sound will help you to feel the latency (i.e. the delay before the visual and the sound).

You will also notice that a small buffer will make the display updates more accurate. To make the scrolling and the oscilloscopes go smoother, you can increase the refresh rate in the Display tab of the Configuration window.
