cut a good length, then slide it down to the bottom of the wire where it's soldered, then put some heat on it (a match works). If it gets loose then there won't be any parts from the wire that can touch the c64

I'd suggest you'll get some wire shrink or what it's called, those little rubber things that will shrink when you put heat on it
