Is there any reason why ![]() ![]() Extending Mirror's comment on ![]() ![]() There are plenty of songs on Nectarine with profanities and 18+ contexts. If you decide to ban one track, then it would only make sense to ban everything else, no? It's not even the case of the track being bad or something, I personally think, that ![]() ![]() |

"Is there any reason why Bad Girls Need Love Too got inactive?" The tune had a lot of complaints, and it's not associated with a production. In the FAQ, which no one reads, under reasons why tunes might be inactive, it cites "over the top obscenity" as a criterion. What constitutes "over the top" is obviously hard to pin down, but this tune is not associated with a prod, and consists of a long porn narration. There's nothing wrong with sexual lyrics, but it's quite jarring when something like this suddenly comes on the stream. That said, if a lot of people really want it reactivated, that can be done, as it's not a long noise track or something. Someone compared this situation with "Check The Penis" which is active. That tune is associated with a prod, which means it should be active unless there's some really compelling reason to make it inactive. That tune is really an edge case, but we lean toward "active" for demotunes, and it just samples/glitches "penis" a lot, rather than narrating a long porn scene. If listeners think it's too pornographic (where's the boundary? hard to say) it can be deactivated again. Making these judgments is difficult and unrewarding, and no matter what we do, or don't do, people complain. But "Bad Girls Need Love Too" could I guess be reactivated if you guys really think it should be. I'm no prude, but I understand why listeners complained about it and I don't think it has enough going for it. |

"Bad Girls Need Love Too" is an RKO prod, so the tune matters in that case. and it's not a remix of a game tune: https://deepsid.chordian.net/?file=MUSICIANS/G/Griff/Burning_Chrome_The_End.sid&subtune=1

I'm curious the number of listeners who have their stream on in a family context. I tend to have it on when I'm alone and don't play it around others much. If I had kids in the room, I wouldn't want porn-themed tunes or swearing audible. But for just myself, anything goes and I don't mind. I wonder how many are worried about whether others will overhear embarrassing material.

I stand corrected about Bad Girls Need Love Too being a scene prod! Thanks, looper, and thanks for adding that info. As for "family listening", I'm pretty sure we'd rather not censor the radio according to "family" preferences. My general thinking is that Necta is a site for grownups (both the stream and the website content) so if people play it while their kids are around, well, parents should know that we have some explicit content on here, and that's their decision to make. However, some stuff is obscene enough that it can bother adult listeners. People don't usually tune in to this stream hoping to hear pornographic lyrics, and there's a sense that a pornographic narration doesn't really fit in with everything else we play on the stream. ![]() ![]() My feeling is that it's better not to have it on the stream, on that basis, but I don't have a strong opinion either way. |

Also seems like with time this remix grew on some people, for example Faraday: 3 years ago left a comment saying "stupid and sexist", but now doesn't agree with the tune's ban. I personally don't see a problem, because, like you've mentioned, nyingen, I also see Nectarine as an "mature only" radio. And I don't mind tunes like "Bad Girls Need Love Too" or "Check the Penis". I think that some people take it too seriously, but that's only my opinion. What I think is that if you would eventually want to ban obscene music, you would at best ban every single track that contains explicit content. (Would be easier too, because you can filter by its status), to a certain extent (swaring does not count). |

I wanna emphasize on "Had" in your initial responce about complaints, nyingen. I might be nitpicking here, but has this tune ever gone inactive earlier?

I'm not sure about that, sorry. As for "Check The Penis", it's one of a number of demotunes that was "banned" in a previous incarnation due to low ratings, but reactivated in the current incarnation due to the new idea that demotunes should generally be active except in some circumstances, and merely having a "low rating" is not really a sufficient criterion. Also, I don't agree at all that either all explicit tunes need to be banned, or none. It's not an either/or. It's a matter of degree, and about what people want to hear on this site. If people really think the bad girls tune just needs to be on the stream, it's not a big deal, it can be reactivated. But some people are going to be unhappy about having to listen to it due to its very considerable explicit content (or having to shut the stream off if they don't want to hear it), and there's a valid argument there as well. |

I agree with nyingen's nuanced take... less censorship is always better and no need to censor content that's part of a 30+ year-old tradition for family contexts. But at the same time, people aren't logging in to hear straight-up porn. (I do log in to hear the occasional hilarious tune, and for me "Bad Girls Need Love Too" always brings a laugh.)

Thanks for the input guys. Let's reactivate it for now, but the discussion can remain open as I still think that, for some listeners (how many?) really verges on some sort of level of "come on, do we have to listen to these kinds of lyrics on the stream?". Would like to re-iterate that "Check The Penis" was banned in a past Necta interation based on it being "crap", not just because its says "penis" a lot. But the current consensus on Necta is that merely being crap is not a good reason to have a demotune be inactive. (If it were, then like half of necta tunes would need to be deactivated...). The focus is on keeping the stream generally enjoyable for listeners, while offering a highly diverse array of scene-related music to choose from. ![]() |

I've been misunderstood... I wrote this song was stupid and sexist (and I still think so), then I wrote "That's lame it has been active for so many years." in reaction to Olchap's comment, meaning that this song doesn't belong to Nectarine. I would like to clarify that I didn't know it was somehow scene related (thx looper for the information). So I understand why ppl want it back in the stream, but still utter crap to me ![]() |
