In a lot of cases, games, etc, shoehorned their "general MIDI" musics out of adlib with uninspired instruments, etc. Very few things really took care of squeezing the most out of it

OPL has multiple variants (OPL2, OPL3, etc), and within them there is variance depending on whether you're using the original Yamaha chip or some emulation thereof

Yeah You'd need someone dedicated to USING the AdLib/OPL to get the max out of it. Just like one may optimize code instead of just converting and hoping the CPU - GPU is powerful enough.
