I don't want to slow down the mixing by having to modify the samples run-time.

Quarter and half volume are not a problem, just requires more sample memory. Combinations like 75% would need to run the mixer twice (add 50% and then 25%).

what about if you halved the volume resolution? like: you can change at any time, but can only use 0..2..4..6..

and multiplications are costly.

(for each sample)

because volume modification needs a multiplication or a very very big table for 16 bit.

Actually... I could add anti-click to the mixer.

But that required 68030 and higher.

mirrorbird: My 14 bit delitracker genie had an "anti-click" option that did more or less exactly that.
